HYMN OF THE MONTH
Each month, we explore a different hymn to be sung each Sunday. Sometimes it is an old favorite; other times it is a new hymn the congregation has never sung. In September, we sing a hymn about the Sacraments:The Gifts Christ Freely Gives, LSB 602
One of our congregation's five Catechism Hymns, this hymn celebrates the Sacraments. It was written in 2001 by Rev. Richard C. Resch, kantor at Concordia Theological Seminary. The first stanza recognizes that "the gifts Christ freely gives" are what makes us His Church. The next four stanza describes these gifts. The first gift "flows from the font" as Christ gives us forgiveness and new life in Holy Baptism. The second gift comes from the Absolution (spoken forgiveness) that we receive after Confession, for "the pastor's words are Christ's." The third gift is "there each day the holy Word is read" in the pages of Scripture or heard in the preaching of Law and Gospel. The fourth gift is "beneath the bread and wine" of Holy Communion, in which we receive "the body and blood [that] remove our ev'ry sin." The final stanza praises the Triune God that gives us the means of grace: Baptism, Absolution, Scripture, and Holy Communion.
